We understand the importance of your occupations
“The term ‘occupation’ is used to describe all the everyday things we do in our life roles, but also the things we do to be who we are, the things we do to create a meaningful life and to engage with wider society and culture” (Occupational Therapy Australia).
Living with Parkinson’s can often bring challenges with everyday activities that can impact independence and quality of life. PACT understands how important occupations are to maintain wellness and quality of life, and so thanks to the support of a John James Foundation grant and the PACT Committee, our Occupational Therapy Service was launched on 11th January 2021. Our services are shaped by members’ needs and are currently delivered by Kate Sterrenberg who is an occupational therapist with a special interest in Parkinson’s. She aims to help address everyday challenges by providing strategies on rehabilitation, compensation, adaptation and environmental modifications.
Our occupational therapy services
Member Home Visits
PACT occupational therapy offers a high-level but comprehensive home visit to any member who requests this service; the intent is to ensure that necessary supports are in place and that no member is in a vulnerable position. Our occupational therapist facilitates ways to make everyday occupations easier by conducting holistic, comprehensive, and objective observations that help to identify challenges, goals, and support needs so that you can most effectively and enjoyably live your life. Home visits also provide a time to talk about how your symptoms might be affecting your daily life, and to make sure you have a good understanding of the Parkinson’s condition. Home visits can be done in person, or virtually.
Member Information and Education
We facilitate regular delivery of information through the PACT bulletin and through OT Seminars where we invite expert guest speakers to discuss topics that have been identified as being important to our members, or arrange useful product demonstrations, to keep you up-to-date and informed. These seminars are delivered either face-to-face in attractive community settings, or virtually via Zoom, and are advertised in our Event Calendar.
Community Outreach Programs
We understand the importance of raising awareness and improving the confidence and skills of the community who provide services to our members. We undertake Parkinson’s training to Residential Aged Care Providers, Hospitals, Suppliers and any organisation that seeks to become a ‘Parkinson’s Aware Organisation’. We also liaise with occupational therapy students at the University of Canberra through programs of education and value the support of our members who volunteer to make this happen.
